The Mitsubishi L200 Commercial has officially joined the UK market, giving farmers, contractors and tradespeople another alternative to the conventional double-cab pickup.
Although it retains four doors and the familiar external appearance of a double cab, this version is permanently converted into a two-seater. The rear seats and seatbelts have been removed, creating an additional secure load compartment behind the driver and front passenger.
That makes the L200 Commercial materially different from the passenger-carrying Series 7, and those differences need to be understood when choosing seat covers, organising equipment and preparing the vehicle for work.
What is different about the L200 Commercial?
The permanent conversion includes:
- Two front seats
- A perforated steel bulkhead behind the front occupants
- A durable phenolic floor replacing the rear seats
- Four integrated D-ring load restraints
- Privacy glass in the rear doors
- A second internal load area alongside the pickup bed
The Titan version has a stated payload of 1,092kg, while the higher-specification Barbarian carries up to 1,025kg. Both can tow up to 3,500kg and have an 80kg roof-load limit.
The main pickup bed measures 1,555mm long, 1,545mm wide and 526mm deep, providing enough space for a standard 1,200mm by 800mm Euro pallet. Auto Trader published the full UK specification on 10 September 2026.
Power comes from a 2.4-litre bi-turbo diesel engine producing 204hp and 470Nm, paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox. Both versions offer selectable driving modes, while the Barbarian receives Mitsubishi's Super Select 4WD II system.
Prices start from £37,495 excluding VAT for the Titan Commercial and £41,195 excluding VAT for the Barbarian Commercial.
Why has Mitsubishi removed the rear seats?
The conversion is intended to make the vehicle primarily suitable for carrying goods rather than passengers.
Since April 2025, HMRC has expected most conventional double-cab pickups to be treated as cars for Benefit-in-Kind and capital-allowance purposes because they are generally considered equally suitable for carrying passengers and goods.
The L200 Commercial has been designed differently. Its rear passenger equipment has been permanently replaced by a load compartment, leaving only two usable seats.
Published reports state that the vehicle qualifies for commercial tax treatment, including the fixed van Benefit-in-Kind charge. Nevertheless, buyers should obtain vehicle-specific advice before committing. VAT, Benefit in Kind, capital allowances and Vehicle Excise Duty do not necessarily apply the same classification tests.
The relevant HMRC guidance was updated on 11 September 2026 and confirms that each vehicle must be assessed according to its construction and primary suitability.
A different interior needs a different protection plan
A normal double cab may be used to transport a team, family members or customers. The L200 Commercial instead provides two front seats and two separate areas for equipment.
That makes front-seat and cab protection especially important. Every occupant will use one of the same two seats, while tools and work equipment stored immediately behind the bulkhead may bring additional dust, moisture and dirt into the vehicle.
The specification or trim name does not, however, confirm that a particular seat cover will fit.
Before ordering protection, check:
- Whether the headrest is integrated or separate
- The overall height and width of the seat
- The size and shape of the side bolsters
- The position of adjustment controls
- Whether seat-mounted airbags are fitted
- The location of seatbelt buckles and anchorages
- Whether the seats are heated
- Any differences between Titan and Barbarian seats
A cover must never obstruct an airbag deployment area, seatbelt, adjustment lever, switch, sensor or other safety equipment.
Five ways to prepare an L200 Commercial for work
1. Protect the front seats before the first dirty job
It is much easier to protect clean factory upholstery than to remove deeply ingrained mud, oil or dust later.
If the pickup will be used for farming, construction, groundwork, utilities or animal-related work, consider what regularly comes into contact with the seats:
- Wet waterproof clothing
- Muddy overalls
- Grease and hydraulic oil
- Metal fasteners and tool belts
- Building dust
- Animal hair
- Food and drinks
A removable, heavy-duty cover can reduce direct exposure to routine dirt and abrasion while making the cab easier to clean.
2. Treat the space behind the seats as a proper load area
Removing the rear seats does not make it safe to leave equipment unsecured.
Use the fitted D-rings for suitable loads and follow Mitsubishi's instructions regarding restraint points, load limits and weight distribution. Sharp tools, heavy components and containers of liquid should be stored so that they cannot move during braking, cornering or off-road travel.
The steel bulkhead separates the occupants from the rear compartment, but it should not be treated as a substitute for securing the load correctly.
3. Separate clean and dirty equipment
The additional internal load space is likely to be useful for items that need more security or weather protection than the open pickup bed provides.
Create defined storage areas for:
- Personal protective equipment
- Clean clothing
- Tools and components
- Wet or contaminated equipment
- Paperwork and electronic devices
- First-aid and emergency supplies
Use washable containers where necessary. Keeping dirty equipment away from clean PPE and the front seats will make the interior easier to manage.
4. Check cab accessories after fitting
After installing any seat cover, floor protection or storage equipment, sit in both front seats and operate every relevant function.
Confirm that:
- Seatbelts fasten and retract normally
- Seats move through their full adjustment range
- Doors close without trapping material
- Pedals and the driver's footwell remain clear
- Mirrors and windows provide unobstructed visibility
- Airbag markings and deployment zones are not covered
- Heating and other seat functions operate correctly
- Loose equipment cannot enter the driver's area
If an accessory interferes with any control or safety system, remove it until the fit has been properly assessed.
5. Record the exact vehicle configuration
Four-door pickups no longer all have the same practical layout. A business may now operate conventional double cabs, single cabs and two-seat commercial conversions within the same fleet.
Record the full model and interior arrangement against the vehicle registration or fleet number. Include photographs of both front seats and note which covers or mats are required.
This helps prevent a double-passenger or rear-seat product being ordered for a vehicle that has only two individual front seats.
